Naturopathic Consultation – Comprehensive Health Assessment

Every new relationship with a patient starts by conducting a foundational comprehensive health assessment. During this assessment, our doctors perform an in-depth analysis of your physical signs and symptoms through delving into the nature of your chief concerns, your medical history, daily dietary and lifestyle habits, and a complaint-oriented physical exam, in order to gain a clear, detailed understanding of your medical profile. Our ultimate goal is to help you feel informed and have a deep understanding our you own health so to feel empowered and confident that we can improve your health and wellbeing. Patients are welcome, though not obligated, to come in with any recent blood work along with any reports from other practitioners who oversees your health.

What to Expect

The initial comprehensive health assessment will take roughly 60-90 minutes to complete.
This intake beings with a conservation. We believe these initial conversations are equally as important as the physical examinations and blood work; reflecting upon both internal health factors and external stressors allows us to determine the root cause to your health concerns. Patients can expect to discuss their health history, lifestyle, mood and energy levels, and their chief medical concerns in detail. We will thoroughly review your diet, intake of alcohol, caffeine and water, as well as your overall level of fitness. We will also reflect upon the relevant social aspects of your life (i.e. home life and work life) to document any stresses which might be connected to your health. Further discussions on your family medical history, any genetic predispositions and a thorough review of current medications will allows us to prevent any negative interactions with our recommended treatments.
A complaint-oriented physical examination, not unlike one that you might receive from your medical doctor, will be performed. As we have the luxury time, we will be able to proceed with the physical exam according to your needs and comfort. Along with your complaint-oriented physical examination, we will also asseess blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, abdominal function, upper respiratory health, reflexes and gynaecological health (including Pap smears and cultures). Finally, if you have not had any recent blood work requisitioned from another primary health-care provider, we may order routine diagnostic lab tests in order to fully assess your medical profile.

This will complete comprehensive medical profile.

Upon completion of the comprehensive health assessment, we will be able to effectively develop an appropriate individualized treatment plan for you.

Functional Diagnostic Testing

Functional Diagnostic Testing provides us with objective data to create your individualized treatment plan in the most effective manner. Following the comprehensive health assessment, specific tests may be recommended in order to rule out and identify the underlying causes of your symptoms. Functional tests are focused on prevention by identify potential health conditions before they become issues and will help us track changes in your health over time. These functional tests are more dynamic and provide greater detail than routine blood tests, and are typically not offered by conventional medical services. The testing our clinic provides include the following.

Urinary hormone assessment

Balanced interactions between hormones are essential to good health and hormone panels can provide an objective overview of the relevant elevations or deficiencies that contribute to the your symptoms. Hormone imbalances can have a significant impact on a patient’s well-being and when corrected. A urinary hormone panel may be recommended when conventional blood tests do not provide us with the essential, detailed information required to understand the full impact hormones may be having on your health. Symptoms that would warrant further hormone testing can include mood swings, anxiety, infertility, premenstrual syndrome, depression, fatigue, weight gain, prostate enlargement, memory loss, sagging skin, increased belly fat, vaginal dryness and hot flashes. We use urinary hormone assessments to measure not only the levels of your hormones, but also how your body is using and metabolizing your hormones that can indicate problems with liver metabolism, and enzyme deficiencies that may be causing the hormonal imbalance

Food Allergy/Sensitivity testing

For patients that present with digestive issues or symptoms that are related to their diet, testing to identify food reactions can be offered to assess how their bodies react to your daily diet. Food sensitivities and allergies can manifest as symptoms such as eczema, acne, rashes, fatigue, weight gain, joint pain, diarrhoea and vomiting and can range from mild to severe in intensity. By removing foods identified as reactive, we can help reduce the these symptoms by reducing systemic inflammation, therefore helping your body heal quickly and efficiently.

Heavy Metal testing

In today’s society, we are exposed to toxic chemicals and pollutants on a minute to minute basis. These toxins are found in everything from makeup and toys to water, food and the air. We eventually accumulate these toxins and heavy metals through chronic exposure and can’t efficiently rid our body of these toxins due to the eventual burden to our detoxification organs. Heavy metal accumulation can manifest in the form of headaches, irritation of the nose and eyes, effects on the central nervous system (i.e. impaired movement or thinking), digestive health and yeast problems, as well as mental health issues. By identifying these key exposures, we can work with you to reduce/eliminate the burden through naturopathic treatments as well as identifying and reducing/eliminating your day-to-day exposures.

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Bio-identical hormone replacement (BHRT) therapy is the administration of molecularly-identical hormones to correct and help conditions associated with hormone deficiencies. These treatments are considered safe, effective and well-tolerated. . The application of these hormones in physiological doses can be used to address a variety of health concerns such as:

  • Low thyroid – Hypothyroidism
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • Peri-menopause
  • Premenstural syndrome
  • Fertility
  • Breast tenderness
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine Fibroids

Most often, symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, acne, unwanted facial hair, painful periods, mood swings and troubles with fertility are reasons to look ino bio-identical hormone treatment. For women at menopausal ago, bio-identical hormone treatment is a great option mitigate symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep problems and weight gain, and also reduce health risks associated with menopause such as osteoporosis

This treatment is highly effective can will only be implemented with a comprehensive health assessment and standardized diagnostic testing to ensure the therapy is appropriate and to rule out the possibility of contraindications to hormone replacement therapy (i.e. a history of breast cancer. We also use standardized diagnostic testing to monitor your levels during treatment. Should the results of these assessments indicate your imbalances stem from adrenal (i.e. hormone production) and liver (i.e. hormone metabolization) dysfunction, addressing these issues with proper treatment prior to beginning BHRT is highly recommended. Women presenting with problems relating their menstrual cycle will likely be recommended to undergo an ultrasound examination to identify any structural contributions to these symptoms. A mammogram within 1 year is also required to prescribe estrogen therapy. The successful completion of these tests in conjunction with the patient’s symptoms will form the basis of dosing.

How it Works

Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy involves the daily topical/suppository application of hormones that can be obtained from a compounding pharmacy with a prescription from a licensed medical profession who have prescribing rights to these substances. The duration, dosage and cycling parameters will be determined by the above-mentioned assessments and patient needs. Your hormone status will be checked every few months through objective lab work and the monitoring the improvement of symptoms. This frequent monitoring throughout treatment will maintain efficacy, safety and ultimately your comfort.

Naturopathic doctors must go through a rigorous pharmaceutical and prescribing course and examination in order prescribing Bio-identical hormones in Ontario.

Vitamin Therapy (what different things are good for)

Preservative free B12 intramuscular injections, Folic Acid
Vitamin B12 and folic acid are essential, water-soluble micronutrients involved in many biochemical processes in the body. These micronutrients are important for our DNA synthesis, the activation of good genes, the suppression of bad genes and the function and shape of our red blood cells. These nutrients are also essential for keeping our neurons healthy, and preventing cardiovascular disease. Signs of low folic acid and vitamin B12 include:

  • Low energy and weakness
  • Numbness and tingling of the limbs (pins and needles)
  • Dizziness
  • Paleness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore, red tongue
  • Weak memory and concentration, confusion
  • Depression

We offer these injections as a quick and efficient way to boost your levels if they have been detected as low, insufficient or deficient on routine bloodwork. Not all injectable forms of these nutrients are well-absorbed – we only use forms that are best incorporated in to the body (B12 as hydroxy or methylcobalamin, and folic acid as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate) and ensure that our all our injectable ingredients are preservative free.
Price: $15/injection

Nebulized Glutathione

Equipped with a nebulizer on site, we can provide our patients with inhaled glutathione treatments. Glutathione is your body’s master antioxidant which is beneficial to many processes such as phase 2 liver detoxification, energy, cognitions, and immune health. The benefits for nebulizing and inhaling glutathione lies in the direct impact glutathione has on treating respiratory symptoms such as in asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and any other lung-associated conditions.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated as a practice in Ancient China, has been in existence for over 2000 years and has a wide array of benefits for the mind and body. From a neurophysical point of view, the basis of acupuncture is to activate the body’s natural healing mechanisms through needling specific points that stimulate the flow of energy through meridians which correspond to specific organ systems outlined by Traditional Chinese medicine. As a result, acupuncture can increases blood flow, establish a healthy nervous and endocrine system, increase energy, improve immune function and restore its overall balance in the body. It is used to treat many conditions, including pain relief, reducing stress and anxiety and balance digestive health. Sessions consist of inserting sterile, ultra-thin, stainless steel needles in various points along the body. Acupuncture is considered a safe, effective and, (contrary to popular belief) painless treatment

Other concepts:

Acupuncture is an incredibly useful tool for those who suffer from chronic pain stemming from various muscular-skeletal ailments (i.e. previous injuries, osteoarthritis and active or sedentary lifestyles etc.). Further, its use as a local treatment around scarring can help to reduce the appearance of the scar and effect the scar has on the fascia. Relaxation acupuncture treatments can give you the time and space you need during the day to energize the brain and body. Acupunctiure is a wonderful and effective tool for anxiety and sleep concerns. Finally, we offer acupuncture for those patients undergoing fertility support – adjunctive use of acupuncture in fertility and perinatal care can increase the event of achieving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

Detox Plans

Disclaimer: We’re not talking about a Juice Cleanse, or a 3-day boxed protocol. There is a lot of controversy around the term “detox”- there are multiple definitions and it is often stated the the bodies detoxifies on its own. Although our bodies do detoxify, one could argue that as a society, our bodies and environment is more burdened with toxins and contaminants than ever before. Sources of environmental toxins include persistent organic compounds (ie. DDT and PCBs), compounds that disrupt hormones (ie. BPA and phalates) and heavy metals (ie mercury, lead, arsenic). Although actions can be taken to reduce exposure, many of these toxins are ubiquitous and unavoidable Case dependent, our naturopathic doctors are able to assess toxic burden through hair, urine and blood analysis. The health of our detoxification organs and biochemical pathways are vital to overall health. By supporting the function of these pathways can reduce the incidence and severity of chronic disease. Our detox plans comprehensively support not only the liver detoxification pathways, but all organs of elimination (skin, lungs, kidneys and bowels).
