What Is Osteopathic Manual Therapy?
You may have heard the term osteopathy. Osteopathic Manual Therapy (sometimes called Classical Osteopathy) is gaining in popularity, though there’s nothing new about it. It’s been around since the late 1800’s.
Osteopathic manual therapy (OMT) is a discipline of natural medicine developed by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, a minister, medical doctor, and military member during the American Civil War. He developed osteopathic manual therapy as a drug free natural manual therapy treatment, for addressing through reason and rational thought, the causes of pain and suffering in the people he lived and worked with.
Because the term “osteopath” refers to a certain type of medical doctor, a person who practices osteopathic manual therapy is called an osteopathic manual therapy practitioner (OMTP). They graduate in Canada with either a MOMSc or a DOMP. This therapy addresses imbalances in the body, with the goal of allowing the body to heal itself and achieve a greater state of health.
Your OMTP won’t use drugs or medication. They will not medically diagnose you. Instead, they work on the awareness that your body is capable of healing itself, and just needs some support to be able to do that again.
During treatment, your osteopathic manual therapy practitioner will use a skill called palpation to assess and treat your body. They will discover the current state of your body, and where you might need some extra attention. Your osteopathic manual therapy practitioner does this by having their hands on the different tissues of your body, looking for changes in motion, texture, temperature, and even moisture levels.
Through this process, your osteopathic manual therapy practitioner can help identify the root cause of whatever health issues you may be experiencing, and provide you with treatment to address those issues, helping your body bring its systems back into balance.
Osteopathic Manual Therapy Treatments For Back Pain
Back pain is a more common issue in today’s world than ever before. In fact, according to Statistics Canada, 80% of Canadians will experience some form of back pain at some point in their life.
This is thanks in part to the fact that so many of us live sedentary lives sitting behind a desk with poor posture. Back pain can also come as a result of injuries, congenital conditions, or unknown reasons. But you don’t have to live with it forever. Osteopathic Manual Therapy treatment may help.
By gently manipulating your muscles, soft tissues and joints, Osteopathic Manual Therapy treatment gently manipulates the tissues of your body, such as muscles, soft tissue and joints, which may relieve your back pain, helping you enjoy a higher quality of life.
And if you are healthy, osteopathic manual therapy can help you identify areas of potential concern for you in the future, to help you remain pain-free as much as possible.
